On a brief visit to the Cape, I took in a few galleries and saw some really good art, mostly paintings. Among my favorites was the Left Bank Gallery in Orleans. They represent an array of mediums from wearables to furniture with many others in between. Their paintings all have a contemporary edge to them, some quite whimsical at first glance but even those are really quite contemplative and engaging. Great encaustics as well as pastels!
In Falmouth I really enjoyed Doug Rugh and Hillary Osborne’s Gallery at the Queens Byway. They are prolific artists who work in different styles but both offer us an extensive view into the life of the upper Cape. Doug’s portraits are not on the website but I thought they had a real life to them, worth going to see. I love Hillary’s approach to painting and I think she has a special way with color.
Then we were on to Highfield Hall & Gardens where my piece is on exhibit in SAQA’s ART AS QUILT exhibit. Wow, is Highfield an excellent location to exhibit art in! It’s a fabulously renovated old summer mansion and an extraordinary example of Stick Style Queen Anne architecture! I remember doing my small part in an effort to save Highfield from demolition back in the nineties. If you can, it’s well worth the trip to see this place and to see our textile art so properly showcased! Art as Quilt: will be on view at Highfield Hall & Gardens through June 19.
Now a couple of friends joined me here and we did enjoy the art here! One of the features was this structure made of wire and beach glass that totally engaged us: the Fragment House by Danielle Krcmar.
Danielle currently serves as Artist in Residence at Babson College and has exhibited widely in the New England area. Her extraordinary sculpture, Fragment House, is the first interactive, environmental artwork that has graced the lawns of Highfield Hall & Gardens. It calls attention to Beebe Woods as the backdrop for Highfield Hall and the domestic components of Highfield’s archtecture and history.
