So much happening these days! I must say, I’ve never opened up my outdoor studio until late May or June. Last year not until July waiting for the floor to be built. This year is another story – March 25th! When the sun is out it’s warm as can be but as soon as it goes back in, it gets pretty chilly out there! And when the sun goes down, I lose the light and I still don’t have my lights set up out there. So I’m relying on the outdoor yard lights shining in…not so good when you’re trying to see how dark the dye color is. Better get those light up tomorrow! Still, it’s been a pretty good start to the dyeing and printing season! Here’s how it started out:
I experimented with titanium oxalate on scarf blank. Soaked charmeuse silk with TO (titanium oxalate); Layed small cochineal blankets over various leaves; More leaves on top of those, then a Logwood blanket over that. Steamed for 2 hours and 40 minutes on low heat – 200 degrees. The print seemed too light, especially on the ends where the cochineal blanket didn’t extend to. So a soak in CC (calcium carbonate) revived it. At first I wanted to add more value to the overall scarf and add a border around the edges. So, undecided, I posted it in an eco-printing group and it was a resounding: “LEAVE IT JUST THE WAY IT IS!” So I did and glad of it!
